Rumours and speculation are beginning to mount regarding the casting of the planned live action version of the cult classic anime, Akira. The two latest names to be thrown around Hollywood are Garrett Hedlund last seen on the big screen in Tron: Legacy who is currently in talks with Warner Bros. to play the part of Kaneda.
This has been confirmed by the entertainment bible, Variety, who went on to make the following statement:
WB acquired the tentpole project for a seven-figure sum from Japanese manga publisher Kodansha in 2008. Set in New Manhattan, the cyberpunk sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experiments.
Now the other name making the rounds is none other than Keira Knightley and while no role has been attached to her or confirmed by the studio, Crunchyroll was speculating that it may be the hard as nails female character Kei, who as a member of the terrorist resistance movement, develops a strong bond with Kaneda.
Keep in mind that this is just speculation and could just be a rumour as Ms. Knightley hasn’t been confirmed for a role as previously mentioned, merely having talks with the studio. Just how Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter were doing so a few weeks ago also for the Akira movie. It looks like this is gathering momentum, JD will watch this project with a keen eye!
