Vita Sales Continue To Plummet

Things aren’t going too well on the Vita front with the news from Japan that for the fifth week in a row, sales have been anything but strong. In fact, sales have fallen through the 20k mark so you would think that Sony must be getting extremely worried right about now. The Vita looks set to follow in the footsteps of the PSP in that, while units were being sold and it wasn’t a failure, the figures were nowhere near what Sony had planned for and certainly nowhere near their Nintendo rival.

For the period from January 9 through to 15, the Vita shifted a pitiful 18,361 units compared to the previous week where the new handheld pushed 42,915 units. So the breakdown since launch looks something like this:

1st week: 324,859 units sold

2nd week: 72,479 units sold

3rd week: 42,648 units sold

4th weeks: 42,915 units sold

5th week: 18,361 units sold

In all fairness, it wasn’t alone in the sales drop with the 3DS suffering as well during the post holiday period. 3DS sales fell 50% but it still kept its head above the 100k mark. The PSP and PS3 witnessed drops as well but even they sold more than the Vita. The week’s sales charts are just below with the previous week’s sales in brackets.

Anyone else think Sony will consider a price drop as Nintendo did for the 3DS or will they weather the storm and hold out for a bit more? Thoughts anyone?
