Harajuku blogger and J-Pop singer, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, has received been bestowed with a title worthy of her status. At the well known Laforet Shopping Center in Harajuku, she was given the title “Kawaii Ambassador of Harajuku” by the Shibuya Ward Harajuku Jingu-mae Shop Association.
She was given this by being able “to spread Harajuku culture and fashion around the world and also to breathe new life into the Harajuku Jingumae area itself by being a symbol of kawaii and spreading youth culture.” Truth be told, Harajuku would probably be a different place without Kyary. Yes, it is a tourist destination with loads of shopping to offer everyone but lately, foreign fashion stores such as H&M and Forever 21 have been changing the landscape by driving up the prices of real estate and taking some of the shine off locally and domestically produced Japanese fashion.
Thanks to the attention given to Kyary and the clothes she wears, she’s diverting attention back to local designers and local labels such as 6%DOKIDOKI and SPINNS who are strong supporters of hers. During the ceremony, Kyary gave out thanks to the strength of her first album “Pamyu Pamyu Revolution” and the huge success of runaway smash hit single, “PONPONPON”. She also had time to take to the stage and perform some of her hits along with some back up dancers.
The dress she wore for the occasion was custom made with items she had purchased along the famous Takeshita Street in Harajuku, a stone’s throw away from the bustle of Harajuku train station.
Kyary also added, “I’m really truly happy! Thank you! … Kyary Pamyu Pamyu” is my second life that started in Harajuku two years ago. I’m going to spread kawaii culture all over the world and stun people everywhere!”
Her first official job as Kawaii Ambassador will be to take part in the HARAJUKU KAWAii!! FES 2012 which will be happening between September 22nd and 23rd.
