Cats are popular around the world especially so in Japan where they celebrate Cat Day or as its known, Nyan Nyan Nyan Day. February 22nd marked the 27th annual cat day for Japan with approximately 10 million felines living in people’s homes which makes Japan one of the highest cat owning populations per capita.
Japan has cat friendly homes with the designs built to accommodate owner’s furry companions, there are also cat cafe’s, around 79 or so, there’s the Cat Island which we have previously covered and also one of Japan’s most famous cats, Maru, has her own YouTube channel. Maru has a US publicist, a Japanese publicist and an agent. Nyan Nyan Nyan day is also a cat themed holiday in Japan.
The name Nyan comes from the sound that cats make, in the Western world we know it as meow, in Japan its ‘nyan’. This day stretches as far back as 1987 according to the Associated Press. For last year’s holiday, animal stores ran special promotions while in 2007, the city of Fukoaka, celebrated the day with “an art show of cat sculptures” put together by 32 artists.
Here’s a video of the previously mentioned Maru, one of Japan’s most famous cats.
