Aww yeah! That most awesome time of the week is here again, Gaming Life in Japan! The segment where we bring a tiny slice of gaming trends into your life from the home of modern gaming.
As we earlier reported, Pokemon X/Y has been released everywhere worldwide so it comes as no real surprise to see that the only game that could knock the mighty Monster Hunter 4 from the top spot would be another huge series. Pokemon has claimed the number one spot with sales of well over 1.7 million units while another extremely successful franchise takes the 2nd spot, Grand Theft Auto V. Meanwhile, the previous number one, MH4, is enjoying some time out of the limelight sitting comfortably at 3rd spot still managing to sell over 110k units. Another handheld, the PS Vita, is enjoying 2 titles in the top 10. DanganRonpa 1&2 Reload from Spike Chunsoft and Sakatsuku Pro Soccer Club wo Tsukurou from Sega are occupying 5th and 8th spots, respectively.
Shifting our gaze to hardware, the Nintendo 3DS still takes out the top spot with over 140k units sold and that’s just the 3DS XL without counting sales of the regular 3DS. If it isn’t MH4 pushing sales of the handheld, it’s Pokemon. But who are we kidding, the 3DS doesn’t really need a hand in sales for Japan. The really big worrying issue continues to be the Wii U with a measly 3,276 consoles sold. In fact, the Sony PSP managed to beat the Wii U for sales, this is despite the fact that the PSP should be on its last legs being superseded by the PS Vita. We’ll see how long that goes on for but with developers still making games for the PSP, it could be the PS2 of the handheld generation.
