New Makoto Shinkai Film Drops Poster and Trailer

Fans of Makoto Shinkai will be familiar with his past stellar works such as 5 Centimetres Per Second, The Garden of Lost Words and the sublime, Your Name. Here’s a look at his latest offering.

Makoto’s latest film offering is called “Weathering With You” (Tenki no Ko) and just like “Your Name”, the music featured is by RADWIMPS. Catch the trailer below:

The trailer features Shinkai’s trademarks, namely rich characters, a compelling story and stunning animation/artwork.

Weathering With You – movie poster

The film hits cinemas in Japan on July 19 and the film will be releasing worldwide as well. Here’s a quick synopsis of the film from GKIDS.

The summer of his high school freshman year, Hokoda runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hokoda meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strongwilled girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…

Here’s some of the casting revealed so far:

  • Shun Oguri as Keisuke Suga
  • Tsubasa Honda as Natsumi
  • Chieko Baisho as Tomi
  • Sakura Kiryū as Nagisa Amano
  • Sei Hiraizumi as Yasui
  • Yuuki Kaji as Takai

Makoto has also said that he’s putting together a novel version of the film too which will be available from July 18 both printed and digital. Hoping a subtitled version of the second trailer finds its way onto YouTube. I checked and couldn’t find one. Keep checking our Twitter for updates on Weathering With You.
