Gaming Life in Japan ~ 14/10/13 – 20/10/13

Hear the trumpets blowing? That’s because they’re signalling the weekly call for Gaming Life in Japan! The part where we out the gaming habits of the Japanese under the microscope and examine what they’re getting up to. Let’s jump straight in!

Turning our attention to the software chart, no big surprise with another massive series in Japan holding onto the top spot as they did last week. Pokemon X/Y is still sitting pretty with just over 2.3 million total sales and just under half a million units shifted this week, that’s a lot of wild Pokemon. Previous number one, Monster Hunter 4, is still hanging around happily occupying the second spot. Another massive title in the West is doing great business in Japan with Grand Theft Auto V taking the third spot. Hugely popular soccer game, FIFA 14, manages to take the sixth spot while the 10th spot sees the PS Vita having a presence with DanganRonpa 1&2 Reload from Spike Chunsoft. For a change, there are quite a few PS3 titles in the top 10, no less than 6 which is way more than what is usually seen. Maybe everyone is just stocking up on PS3 titles before the PS4 drops in Japan early next year?

Hardware sees no real change with the Nintendo 3DS still the king of console shifting over 94k units, that’s just the XL version, while the regular 3DS saw sales of over 59k handhelds. Absolutely staggering figures when you consider how long the 3DS has been out in Japan, you’d imagine that numbers would have dropped right off but every week there’s something new. And yet again, the massive worrying sign for Nintendo is the Wii U with sales at an all time low of just 2,999 units shifted. Even the ageing Sony PSP sold through 3, 651 units. And with no title for the Wii U in the top 10, one can only imagine what number we’ll see next week.
