For those that don’t know about Hachiko, a brief background. Hachiko was an Akita breed dog that used to wait for his master everyday at Shibuya train station. One day, his master, a university professor named Hidesaburo Ueno, passed away and never came back to meet Hachiko. Ever the faithful canine, Hachiko continued to wait everyday at the station for nine years until he too passed away.
A statue of Hachiko was erected at Shibuya train station which to this day is a hugely popular meeting place for loads of people. Now at the University of Tokyo, where the professor taught, a new statue was erected. The statue coincides with the 90th anniversary of the passing of the professor and the 80th anniversary of Hachiko’s passing.
The statue is a loving memorial with both dog and owner showing Hachiko happily greeting Ueno in a loving pose. In case you missed it, Hollywood made a film starring Richard Gere around this story, you can catch the trailer below.
