Fukubukuro is the name given to the lucky bags which go on sale in Japan on January the 1st each year. Nearly all stores in Japan offer them ranging from the Pokemon centre, McDonald’s’, KFC, fashion and loads more. For this first look, we thought we’d feature one of the best anime goods store, Animate. Animate have stores all over Japan with the stores in Akihabara and Ikebukuro worthy of a visit with their amazing stock.
We already know that Akihabara is Ground Zero for all things otaku, right?
Well, now there’s a new store opening up from a very popular chain. Animate has its main store in Ikebukuro, seen as a more female friendly part of Tokyo, catering for the female otaku. But they now have a new store opening up in Akihabara as of June 2016. The new store boasts 7 floors of oatku goodness and is also known as “AKIBA Girls Station”. What separates this store from the others in Akihabara, which tends to be more male-centric, is that the anime/manga are going to be geared more towards their female audience, much like in Ikebukuro. It’s also conveniently located very close to the JR Akihabara station, only about 5 minutes away.

Golden Week is happening in Japan right now, this is the period of time from the end of April until May 5th. It’s known as Golden Week due to so many national holidays happening during this time. There are 3 consecutive holidays from April 29 to the 29th and then another 4 happening from May 3rd and during this time, quite a few of the businesses close up for the week and do some travelling.
Akihabara during this time is more crowded than usual especially with tourists leading many of the otaku stores to offer special events and offers. The largest shop chain of anime, manga and games is no different. Animate has just opened an exclusive “Only Shop” which is selling merchandise for hit anime, A Certain Scientific Railgun S. Most of the Railgun merchandise is available at the store including limited edition items as well. If you’re on town, best you hurry up along to it as it closes on May 6th.
Two of the largest anime, manga and just generally Otaku goodness stores in Akihabara would have to be Gamers and Animate. They both have multi level stores which are a must visit for anyone visiting Akihabara and it just so happens that now they’re both running a similar exhibition in their respective stores.
The exhibition entitled the “First Operation Museum” is for one of the most successful animes for Winter 2013, that anime being Vividred Operation. Both stores are running their exhibitions from March 22nd to April 7th with the contents being basically the same and consisting of anime scene panels, posters, assorted character goods and magazine cover illustrations.
