Japandaman reviews Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry

Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry is the latest theatrical release from Madman entertainment and is a movie designed to get the die hard fans back to falling in love with the series but leaving the casual anime viewer extremely confused. The trailers and hype surrounding the movie made it seem that this is the final chapter and it was bound to be an epic time, however the only thing that was truly the set up for the beginning of the end was the post credit scene.

To not spoil the movie for people that do intend to go and watch this film we follow Natsu and his friends who travel to the island Kingdom of Stella to go and retrieve the stolen ‘Dragon Cry’ staff that could bring the world into destruction. It is up to the Fairy Tail gang to go and claim back what belongs to them. The film introduces characters that have some influence to the lead up of the beginning of the end.

In terms of visuals, its decent. It felt just like watching the last season in terms of animation only just adapted for the big screen. There were moments that were visually stunning and the fight scenes in general were just so entertaining to watch.

The movie itself has some small flaws. It felt like I was watching an extremely long episode which was just thrown together for the sake of putting out a story. It seemed at times that the plot was rushed and certain moments not making any sense, however if you are a long time fan of the series you will finally understand why all of this takes place as it does set up what will be the finale.

The amount of fan-service this film had was over the top and there were some scenes that did seem rather unnecessary, however in terms of comedy it had just the right amount to keep the audience entertained and engaged in the movie. Character development was definitely there and it was fun to see all the gang just give it their all.

My favourite part of the film was the underlying message that the story was conveying, friendship is the power that makes you. Having friends you love and care for are the driving force that gives you power. This is the clear message put across particularly as this is the fuel that Natsu relies on to give him the power that he needs.

I didn’t hate the film, but if I had no previous knowledge about Fairy Tail and that was my first time seeing the film, I would be left extremely confused. This is definitely a film for the fans of the series.

If you are a fan of the series it is an easy 4/5 however it you are just that casual anime fan I would probably rate it a solid 3/5. I feel that this movie will benefit more when it receives a dub.

The film is out now for a limited time.

Spring 2017: Our Top Picks this Anime Season

We have crossed the ‘third’ episode line for the new anime season!

It’s that time where anime writers jump onto their computers and deliver their thoughts on the shows that are a must watch for this new season, and naturally I must do the same. Now I thought I wasn’t going to have a big list of anime to tell you guys about, but once I looked at the shows I am currently watching it ended up being eight. These shows have managed to make it to the ‘third’ episode without me wanting to throw them into the ‘dropped’ anime pile. So without further ado here are my top picks for the 2017 Spring season.

Attack on Titan Two (Found on AnimeLab, Crunchyroll and Funimation)
This is the anime that every anime fan is currently watching. After the biggest gap between season we have finally got the next part of the story and my goodness it is brilliant. Every episode so far has kept me on the edge of my seat, with the latest episode making me question everything in the universe. It is fantastic. The animation and general progression of the story is much better and we are finally getting some decent answers that we have been wondering for a long time. This is one show I cannot miss each week, and with the release of the dub this will be the show were I will be watching both sub and dub.

My Hero Academia Season Two (Found on Funimation and Crunchroll)

I am going to admit something, I wasn’t the biggest fan of season one of My Hero Academia. In fact I was the person who was telling everyone that there are better shows out there and why are you wasting your time watching this. With that said I did say to myself that I was going to give this show a chance when it was released and I have been pleasantly shocked as to how much I have been enjoying the series. The new season it just so much better than the previous one. There is a lot more action and the animation is much nicer. I have been watching this in dub as it is released the same time and I have to admit that this has been a extremely solid dub. I am eager to see where this season will go.

Anonymous Noise

There is always going to be that one show that just stands out and becomes your obsession. For me, its Anonymous Noise. This is the anime where from just two episodes has managed to make you feel emotionally drained and connected to the characters. The animation and soundtrack will keep you hooked and from what I’m gathering with the way that this story is leading it will be one that everyone will be wanting to watch. I have yet to see anyone say something bad about this show. I feel that this is the love triangle anime that we all deserved but haven’t got until now.

Sakura Quest (Found on Crunchyroll)

I don’t exactly know why I am enjoying this series, but I am. The story of a girl who becomes the ‘queen’ of a small country town as part of a tourism marketing ploy is the anime that has a lot of people talking. I can see the charm, it has adorable characters, animation is crisp and the story is interesting in it’s own right. It definitely nice to see an anime series that is not based on any manga or light novel so it means that no one has a spoiler as to what is going to happen. I like it, admittedly I did find the third episode to be a bit slow, that said I’m still intrigued and can’t wait to see where this one goes next.

Grimoire of Zero (Found on AnimeLab)

I love everything about this series. This is the dark horse of the season where I have a feeling a lot of people will just push this one aside and won’t bother about it. However, I can assure you they are truly missing out on a very decent series. The animation and characters are just delightful and this had such a solid starting episode that I was just eager to find out what is going to happen next. With the right amount of comedy and action thrown in you can’t help but love this series. I really loved the third episode that was just released. It made me laugh so much but it kept me engaged and desperately wanting more. Admittedly this might seem like a weird concept of a beast and two witches working together, but it is good.

Love Tyrant (Found on Crunchroll)

Absolute stupidity at it’s finest. This show manages to take the piss out of all the things you might come across in an anime. I want to name all of them but I feel it’s one of those cases were you just have to watch and count how many times they try to rip off an anime. I feel like this is what you would consider the parody anime of this season. In fact, I don’t think we have come across an anime like this before. It is hilarious, the animation is exactly what you would expect from a comedy anime and the characters are so dumb, but loveable at the same time. This is just one of those shows where if you want cheap laughs, you will get it from this one.

Boruto (Found on AnimeLab)

I had to add this one in. As a person who didn’t complete the original series (ducks from tomatoes being thrown at her direction) I did promise myself that if I was going to start a long series anime I was going to do so with ‘Boruto’. It is surprisingly enjoyable with the same charm that the original series Naruto had. It is adorable, it still has that feel that it is going to be a punch in the heart in the near future. I am looking forward to where the next generation is going to go and I am excited to see where this show will go. So far the show has been pretty easy to follow and that I was able to pick up from where the story is now taking place. Keen to see how long I will last with this one.

Eromanga Sensei (Found on AnimeLab)

I don’t know what it is about this show that is keeping me interested but for whatever reason it is. ‘Eromanga Sensei’ is pretty much everything I hate in terms of story and characters, but yet I am still sticking with this series. It has moments where I am laughing and then some moments where it is heartfelt. It’s interesting enough that it isn’t dragging in terms of plot and the animation is really neat, however I will be first to admit if the story is heading the way it is, this might be a mid drop series. For now, I am intrigued as to where this series will go.

So there you have it guys, there is some good stuff out there this season (but there is a lot of rubbish as well). Let us know some of the shows you are watching (or what we should be watching) and also let us know what shows you have actually dropped this season.
