Review: Attack On Titan Season 1 Collection (Blu Ray)

I’m not going to lie, this will probably be the shortest review yet, only because I feel that by now, every man and their dog has seen or at the absolute very least, heard about Attack On Titan. It changed the anime landscape in a big way when it debuted back in 2013 and for those who still have zero idea what it’s about, here’s a quick spoiler catch you up.

*deep breath*

It’s set in a time where humankind is on the brink of extinction and the remaining survivors live in cities and villages behind three large walls that surround what little safe land they have left. Very early on, we are introduced to Eren Yeager, his sister who we learn is adopted Mikasa Ackerman and village friend, Armin Arlert. After living in relative security for over 100 hundred years, everything is changed when the humanoid Titan show up, smash through Wall Maria and begin to devour the hapless humans. Eren, Mikasa and Armin take the fight to the Titans by joining the Survey Corps who fly around on Omni-directional Mobility Gear apparatus killing the Titans. Along the way, they meet many soldiers who become their friends, each with their own reason for being there risking their lives. They also meet and kill many Titans who range in size and are either male or female. Things take a turn when they meet the savage Female Titan which elevates the stakes in the fight until Eren discovers he holds a potential discovery within him to turn the tide of the whole war.

*and exhale*

So it’s a very action packed anime that has drawn many fans worldwide and many cosplayers even to this day still show their dedication by having AoT meetups at conventions. Suffice to say if you haven’t seen it, then you owe it to yourself to at least check out the first few episodes to see if it’s for you as some people don’t like it. What I wanted to focus on was the recent release from Madman which packs all the drama and tension from season one and packs it into the recently released, “Attack On Titan Season 1 Collection”.

There are four discs in the Blu Ray edition with all 25 episodes contained and they’ve thrown in some really collection special features. There’s episode commentaries, eyecatch gallery, textless songs, US trailers, AoT at Anime Expo, the making of Attack On Titan and a chibi theatre with a feature, “Fly, Cadets, Fly! Days 1 – 25”, all of which are worth having a look at.

It’s also a great time to get into this release seeing as how season two is finally showing, you can check that out on Anime Lab so if you are new to the series, then is ideal for you. Fantastic series, stunning animation, massive range of characters for you to love and hate and excitement dialled right up with a healthy dose of drama sprinkled throughout.

Final score: 9/10

First Impressions: Attack On Titan Season 2 Episode 1

One of the most watched anime’s and a massive fan favourite returned on the weekend for season two, thanks to Anime Lab. Attack On Titan Season Two premiered with a thumping new OP and great action to boot in just the first episode. Farrah and Japandaman break down episode 1, Beast Titan.

Japandaman Breakdown

Ok, I’ll try to keep this spoiler free but first off…Titans have been hiding where?? Right from the first minute, revelations and more questions are raised so if you thought answers were coming after season one, we may have to wait a bit longer. It’s great to see that some fan favourites are back even though we’re yet to see them in action. Also good to see some new characters introduced straight away with some substance to them. The episode starts nicely building the tension and drama that we’ve become accustomed to, however it isn’t long before the Titans show up and start wreaking havoc. We find out early on that Wall Rose has been breached which transitions nicely into some action for the rest of the episode without letting up the pace.

Miche is a character that kicks some ass during this action sequence who we learn is only second to Levi for his fighting skills, he’s amazing. Whether or not he’s around for a while for us to get used to, well… There’s a nice flashback scene with Eren and Mikasa before cutting back to the main storyline but we’re yet to see them in action this early on. The Titans as usual are creepy, scary and just have all sorts of wrong expressions on their faces and yes, there’s already a variety of different ones in the first episode. The animation on the horses when there’s lots happening on screen is quite stunning and the 3D effect comes across very cleanly with an exceptionally high level of wow factor thrown in.

It’s obviously very early in the season but if the rest of the episodes follow the action and tension of this first episode, then anime fans are definitely in for a treat. And oh yeah, keep an eye for the Titan who the episode is named after. He’s something very different in more ways than one. I can wait and see what direction they take him in, I really hope there’s a cool story arc in there around him.

4.5/5

Farrah Breakdown

Attack on Titan is back baby!

I am going to keep this short and sweet and avoid using spoilers because I feel that it wouldn’t be right. If there was one show that made you feel like you have been punched in the face from pure brilliance it was the premiering episode for season two. This show managed to capture my interest from the very start. The slight recap of what has happened previously was welcomed, as it has been many years since the original series has been shown.

The show has this new intensity that I haven’t felt in a while watching an action filled anime. The characters show a new depth and have clearly developed which is something I did wonder we would see. The interesting thing for me though is even though you know that there is some clear progression it still feels like we have never been apart from this world for long.

This first episode was gruesome as hell. If I were to compare this show with a live action this show would clearly be the anime version of ‘The Walking Dead’. Unexpected deaths and shock value hit you straight away (that poor horse). The show is already establishing that things are dark, things are depressing, and that there is the need for a hero.

If I had to find some faults for this episode I would probably say it was the opening theme song. It just didn’t have that same iconic feel as oppose to the previous season but it does seem like a theme that people will grow to love as the series goes on.

It is definitely a show I can see myself watching week after week, leaving me desperately wanting more. I am so glad that we have this show back in our lives and that we have this unique story being unfolded through this medium. It had the right amount of comedy to balance out the seriousness of the story.

For a first impression I give this show a 4/5

Welcome back Attack on Titan, we have missed you.

JAPANESE COMMERCIALS, VOL. 18

This update is way overdue so sincere apologies for that, life has been quite hectic lately. Let’s ramp up the randomness with some new commercials straight from Japan thanks to YouTuber JPCMHD!

Some Y!Mobile with J-Pop thrown in, Justin Bieber? (I know), potato chips, Nintendo Switch, mobile game Lord Of Knights x Attack On Titan collaboration and heaps more! It’s so good to watch Japanese commercials again.

New Attack On Titan Collaboration

I’ve said this before but Japan LOVES their collaborations. Whether it’s anime x with a fast food outlet or something along those lines, there’s always something new coming out. Recently we heard of a new collaboration between the hit series, Attack On Titan, and Araiguma Rascal/Rascal the Raccoon, a popular and long running series on Japanese TV. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Rascal the Raccoon so the powers that be put their heads together for this joint venture.

On May 1st, a temporary store will open its doors selling Attack on Titan x Rascal the Raccoon items. The store will be opening in Harajuku (where else?) and will see items being sold with illustrations combining both series’.

The AoT characters seeing a crossover are Armin, Eren, Hange, Levi and Mikasa.

Japan PS4 2016 Lineup

Here’s an amazing video in the style that only Japan can pull off of the release schedule for the PS4 in 2016. I just love how the Playstation intro track has been remixed by Tofubeats and carries over  into the whole clip! There’s some great stuff in this clip, Gundam Break 3 looking amazing for one and Dark Souls 3 for those who like their gameplay devilishly difficult.

Star Ocean, Yakuza, Naruto…it’s al in here and waiting!

Attack On Titan PS4 Footage

Just came across this awesome footage from the newly released in Japan title, Attack On Titan. It’s great to see some of the in game action which look fantastic, I’m a fan of the series and I really can’t for a Western release. Here’s the footage which goes for over 2 minutes and also features Titan Eren kicking some massive Titan ass!

Is anyone else waiting for this title?

Attack On Titan Arcade Game Has Unique Control System

We briefly mentioned the arcade game of hugely popular series, Attack On Titan, making an appearance at a recent trade show but we’ve only seen recently is the amazing control system the game features. In a show of making you feel really immersed in the game, the controller is in a fact a dual controller system not unlike the 3D Manoeuvre Gear that’s featured in the series.

Very amazing and extremely innovative control method!

I just love that everyone playing the game is in cosplay!

Attack On Titan PS4 Intro

I’m a pretty big fan of Attack on Titan as a series. I’ve watched the anime and can’t wait for the 2nd season and also read quite a bit of the manga. The live action movies were hit and miss for me but to each their own, right?

Anyways, while we wait for the second season the good folks over at Koei Tecmo have been hard at work on a AoT game for the PS3, PS4 and the PS Vita. The game recently touched down in Japan and with that was the release of the opening cinematic for the PS4 version of the game. Needles to say, it looks amazing and very fast paced full of the very same action that made the series a runawaway success. But don’t take my word for it, roll the video!

And the best news is, the game is headed to the West later this year. Really can’t wait to play some of this on the Vita and PS4.
