Great news coming out of Tokyo with the announcement that Square Enix have opened a new cafe in the heart of otaku goodness, Akihabara.
It can be easily found as it’s located right next to another landmark in Akiba, Yodobashi Camera, next to Akihabara train station. One of the cool things about the cafe is that the interior theme will change depending on whatever SE is promoting at the time.
This new cafe joins the existing eatery dedicated to Final Fantasy XIV in Akihabara and Artnia, the other cafe situated in Shinjuku. As of writing, the theme for the new cafe is Final Fantasy XV which is evident by footage of the game being broadcast on many monitors. As well as the soundtrack being played through speakers, there are posters, artwork and character statues to really immerse you into the atmosphere.
There’s the obligatory gift store section loaded with goodies from Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest too.
For those of you keen to check it out, here’s the details on where to find it:
Really excited when I heard about this…there’s a Beauty and the Beast themed restaurant newly opened in Japan which looks absolutely amazing!
Situated in Yokohama, the cafe/restaurant has a beautiful provincial feel to it reminiscent of the visuals seen in the Disney classic animated movie. It’s proving to be extremely popular with both locals and visitors alike so far since opening in August, 2016.
Here’s a few snaps of the gorgeous interior:
But it isn’t just about how good the inside looks, let’s check out the food as well:
The restaurant opens from 11:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (lunch); 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (dinner) and is closed on Wednesdays. For more info, check out the Japanese website.
Dark Souls fans can now eat in a place that looks like something out of their favourite game. The Dark Souls cafe has opened in Japan in the Nishi Azabu region and by all accounts looks very medieval and very cool.
Japan has cat cafes and black cat cafes. They even have a penguin bar to cater for the interests of the many inhabitants. You can add one more to the mix now with the coming of the Owl Cafe known as “fukurou cafe” (フクロウカフェ).
And yes, some of the cafes will let you hold onto the owls as you partake in your tea and snack. And of course, everything is owl themed. From the cups to the condiment shakers and the snacks, everything carries a distinct owl theme which will put a smile on your face. There are a few around now with some of the more well known ones being Fukurou no Mise (“Owl Shop”) and Tori no Iru Cafe (“The Cafe with Birds”).
And if you’re thinking that it sounds really cute and unique, then you’d be right. Just take a look at the gallery below.
Japan has many unique and wonderful things, one of them happens to be a cat cafe. A place where for around $10 an hour, you can go and mingle with some cute and friendly nekos and buy treats to feed them. The cats, being so used to human interaction, will happily nuzzle up against you and purr in your lap. Well, Japan has taken the niche curiosity one step further by opening a new type of cat cafe. A black cat only cafe.
In Himeji which can be found in the Hyogo Prefecture, the only requirement for the cats there are to be black. Named Cat Café Nekobayaka -black cat centimeter-, its been running for around two years now and it started off being a traditional cat cafe. It was only recently they overhauled the business and made it into a black cat only establishment. Have a look at the gallery below, and if you’re wondering how the cats can be told apart considering that they’re all jet black, they wear different colour collars!
If you’d like to get along and check it out, the cafe can be found a stone’s throw away from the JR Himeji Station. You’ll be paying ¥1,000 for entry which covers 30 mins, additional lots of 30 mins can be purchased for ¥500. Drinks and alcohol are also on offer.
In yet another reason why Japan is the place to be for Otakus of any kind, now we have news of a woman inspired by animes to create some artwork in cafe lattes.
The artist’s name is Sugi otherwise known as Nowtoo and you can catch more of her work on her Instagram feed. Keeping in mind that the creation only exists for a fleeting moment until someone drinks it or stirs some sugar in, she shows an amazing amount of dedication to her craft.
You can also see more of her on her YouTube channel where there are clips actually showing how the works were created. Each painstaking stroke has been captured so you can really appreciate how much effort and time has gone into it. You can catch a video below of her bringing Naruto to life.
Capcom not content with opening a Capcom themed bar in downtown Shinjuku has gone one further and announced that they’re opening a new commercial venue.
Capcom are taking their Resident Evil series to the masses with the opening of a Resident Evil themed cafe and grill in popular and trendy Shibuya. Called the Resident Evil Cafe & Grill S.T.A.R.S, the venue will be host to dance performances from Dance Team S.T.A.R.S. Angelique and a place where you’ll also be able to pick up limited items.
No word as yet on what these limited items are or what the menu will have on offer but knowing Capcom, it’d be something pretty special. For those in Japan, the bar opens on Friday July 13th and can be found at Shibuya Parco Part 1. Map can be found below for navigation.
