Any diehard Sega fan will absolutely love the Dreamcast console and undoubtedly one of the best games to be released for the system was the JRPG, Skies Of Arcadia. Vadu Amka, a Belgian graphic artist, clearly felt the same way as he showed off this Skies Of Arcadia inspired Dreamcast he modded.
He explained how he went about it below.
I used lime wood I previously cut with a rotating cutter (called a dremel) for the hood. All the wood’s imperfections were first resealed with some light color wood paste, then sanded stained with mahogany stain. After that, I painted it with a blue and gray color before sanding it one more time to give it a more degraded and aged look. I waxed the hood and made it waterproof. I put inside a small grid, oxidizing it with ocher pigment called « natural earth shade » (synthetic iron oxyde). All the rest is an optical illusion made from several black and brown juices. What seems to be metal ring is, in fact, a leather band treated and painted with oxyde paint. I used the same pattern for the gamepads slots. I finally reproduced the logo with plexiglass and remolded it with some 2-component silicone slim before molding it in resin and painting it.
In yet another “Japan is awesome” bit of news, we hear that something really cool and retro is heading for the Nintendo 3DS. Fans of the Sega Dreamcast will be pleased to hear that a new theme, based around Sega’s console, is headed to the 3DS.
The theme has awesome effects like the sound of the spinning drive, the beeping VMU and even the spinning fan. Like all good things, you need to have a Japanese 3DS and access to the Japanese eShop to download this. But fingers crossed that maybe sometime in the future, it makes its way to the West as well.
The Sega Hard Girls are 2D girls versions of Sega consoles from yesteryear. From the Dreamcast through to the MegaDrive (Genesis). Now they’re going to be making an appearance as chips in a smartphone game.
The game in question is Phantasy Star Online 2 ES. The chips will be used in game to give the player various bonuses. The specific girls making a show will be the MegaDrive, Sega Saturn and the Dreamcast. The girls will have the ability to evolve into a “Tower” version so the MegaDrive can combine the Mega-CD and Super 32X, for example.
This offer is time limited and will expire on March 4th, 2015 so if you have access to this game, make sure you don’t miss out. Check the Hard Girls site for more info.
Japandaman’s favourite all time home console is the Sega Dreamcast and one of the best games on the system that was ahead of its time is Skies of Arcadia. The inventive and adventurous RPG from Overworks proved to be a huge favourite with fans so it’s with bated breath that I came across this figure.
This is a stunning figure of Vyse, the lead protagonist of the game which is being distributed by First 4 Figures on their website. It isn’t cheap at $219.99 but it looks unbelievable.
This is just one picture but for more information and pics, head on over to the site for everything.
There’s many Sega fans out there either for the amazing software they produced, the addictive gameplay found in their consoles or both. There are many fond memories of the Mega Drive (Genesis), Master System, Game Gear and, my personal favourite, the Dreamcast.
So it’s with great anticipation that I hear about an anime series being produced called Sega Hard Girls which features these old school consoles as girls who will be cast as kawaii versions of the retro systems.
There is a Twitter account but information is extremely tight at the moment with no air date or much information. But being fans of this exciting project, we’ll keep you posted.
We here at Japandaman HQ have said a few times that the Sega Dreamcast is our all time favourite console. Ok, maybe that only applies to Japandaman. In any case, it looks like there are still some diehard fans in Japan with one fan taking his love to a whole new level.
They’ve gone to the trouble of reproducing the Dreamcast for its 15 anniversary in this stunning silver and stainless package and put it up on Ebay. The asking price? A mere #399.00. To have a look at the time, just flip the case open as you would to insert a game disc. The box it comes in even has orange felt lining the case. Classy. The auction has since ended, did a Japanda end up buying it? Hmm…
Crossovers in games are nothing new, especially when you’re talking about Samurai & Dragons which features more crossovers than you can poke a stick at. From Bayonetta, monsters from Soul Sacrifice and even Sonic the Hedgehog, there’s something in there for everyone.
Now, the artist behind Vocaloid Hatsune Miku, has lent his artistic skill to the game as well. Artist, Kei, has managed to convert the Sega Dreamcast and its memory card, the VMU, into mascot characters for the game, Hyperdimension Neptunia. During the Samurai & Dragons meeting scheduled for 2013, the UC Dreamcast, UC Visual Memory Unit and two more cards will be handed out.
The event is pencilled in fo June 2nd. To top it all off, 4 lucky attendees will also be walking away with a WI-Fi PS Vita model, the Deluxe pack of Samurai & Dragons and a case of 24 Red Bulls for the long gaming session that awaits you.
Fans of the cult classic Sega Dreamcast game, Shenmue, will be absolutely clamouring to get this next release. First4Figures is going to be releasing a 12 inch (1/6 scale) figure of Ryo Hazuki, Shenmue’s hero and main character.
The figure will be available in two flavours, regular and Exclusive, which is part of the new Sega All-Stars statue line. The Exclusive version will come with a base for the figure modelled after the highly sought after Phoenix Mirror relic from the game. The regular edition will sell for $170 while the Exclusive figure will set you back $185. The figure also comes with a certificate of authenticity which will allow you to secure the same model number in the series as they’re released.
If you want a piece of gaming history, best you be quick. The figure is limited to 750 pieces worldwide and will be shipping in Q4, 2013 so pre-order today.
Sega has collaborated with apparel label, “galaxxxy” to release a brand new range of accessories and clothes called, “Segakawaii”, where they have taken Sega’s well known products and given them an overhaul. The artist known as Kei, responsible for the look of well known Vocaloid Hatsune Miku, has turned his considerable talent skill set to designing and illustrating something for retro console lovers.
Kei has illustrated a range of Segakko or Sega daughters for 13 of Sega’s past consoles, some known extremely well and some others relics of the past. It’s all for a new pack of digital card sets for a free to play PS Vita RPG, Samurai & Dragons. The game is a coming together of fantasy ideals from both the Western and Eastern worlds.
Let’s give a massive shout out to Japandaman’s favourite console of all time, the Sega Dreamcast!
