Review: Attack On Titan Season 1 Collection (Blu Ray)

I’m not going to lie, this will probably be the shortest review yet, only because I feel that by now, every man and their dog has seen or at the absolute very least, heard about Attack On Titan. It changed the anime landscape in a big way when it debuted back in 2013 and for those who still have zero idea what it’s about, here’s a quick spoiler catch you up.

*deep breath*

It’s set in a time where humankind is on the brink of extinction and the remaining survivors live in cities and villages behind three large walls that surround what little safe land they have left. Very early on, we are introduced to Eren Yeager, his sister who we learn is adopted Mikasa Ackerman and village friend, Armin Arlert. After living in relative security for over 100 hundred years, everything is changed when the humanoid Titan show up, smash through Wall Maria and begin to devour the hapless humans. Eren, Mikasa and Armin take the fight to the Titans by joining the Survey Corps who fly around on Omni-directional Mobility Gear apparatus killing the Titans. Along the way, they meet many soldiers who become their friends, each with their own reason for being there risking their lives. They also meet and kill many Titans who range in size and are either male or female. Things take a turn when they meet the savage Female Titan which elevates the stakes in the fight until Eren discovers he holds a potential discovery within him to turn the tide of the whole war.

*and exhale*

So it’s a very action packed anime that has drawn many fans worldwide and many cosplayers even to this day still show their dedication by having AoT meetups at conventions. Suffice to say if you haven’t seen it, then you owe it to yourself to at least check out the first few episodes to see if it’s for you as some people don’t like it. What I wanted to focus on was the recent release from Madman which packs all the drama and tension from season one and packs it into the recently released, “Attack On Titan Season 1 Collection”.

There are four discs in the Blu Ray edition with all 25 episodes contained and they’ve thrown in some really collection special features. There’s episode commentaries, eyecatch gallery, textless songs, US trailers, AoT at Anime Expo, the making of Attack On Titan and a chibi theatre with a feature, “Fly, Cadets, Fly! Days 1 – 25”, all of which are worth having a look at.

It’s also a great time to get into this release seeing as how season two is finally showing, you can check that out on Anime Lab so if you are new to the series, then is ideal for you. Fantastic series, stunning animation, massive range of characters for you to love and hate and excitement dialled right up with a healthy dose of drama sprinkled throughout.

Final score: 9/10

First Impressions: Attack On Titan Season 2 Episode 1

One of the most watched anime’s and a massive fan favourite returned on the weekend for season two, thanks to Anime Lab. Attack On Titan Season Two premiered with a thumping new OP and great action to boot in just the first episode. Farrah and Japandaman break down episode 1, Beast Titan.

Japandaman Breakdown

Ok, I’ll try to keep this spoiler free but first off…Titans have been hiding where?? Right from the first minute, revelations and more questions are raised so if you thought answers were coming after season one, we may have to wait a bit longer. It’s great to see that some fan favourites are back even though we’re yet to see them in action. Also good to see some new characters introduced straight away with some substance to them. The episode starts nicely building the tension and drama that we’ve become accustomed to, however it isn’t long before the Titans show up and start wreaking havoc. We find out early on that Wall Rose has been breached which transitions nicely into some action for the rest of the episode without letting up the pace.

Miche is a character that kicks some ass during this action sequence who we learn is only second to Levi for his fighting skills, he’s amazing. Whether or not he’s around for a while for us to get used to, well… There’s a nice flashback scene with Eren and Mikasa before cutting back to the main storyline but we’re yet to see them in action this early on. The Titans as usual are creepy, scary and just have all sorts of wrong expressions on their faces and yes, there’s already a variety of different ones in the first episode. The animation on the horses when there’s lots happening on screen is quite stunning and the 3D effect comes across very cleanly with an exceptionally high level of wow factor thrown in.

It’s obviously very early in the season but if the rest of the episodes follow the action and tension of this first episode, then anime fans are definitely in for a treat. And oh yeah, keep an eye for the Titan who the episode is named after. He’s something very different in more ways than one. I can wait and see what direction they take him in, I really hope there’s a cool story arc in there around him.

Attack on Titan is back baby!

I am going to keep this short and sweet and avoid using spoilers because I feel that it wouldn’t be right. If there was one show that made you feel like you have been punched in the face from pure brilliance it was the premiering episode for season two. This show managed to capture my interest from the very start. The slight recap of what has happened previously was welcomed, as it has been many years since the original series has been shown.

The show has this new intensity that I haven’t felt in a while watching an action filled anime. The characters show a new depth and have clearly developed which is something I did wonder we would see. The interesting thing for me though is even though you know that there is some clear progression it still feels like we have never been apart from this world for long.

This first episode was gruesome as hell. If I were to compare this show with a live action this show would clearly be the anime version of ‘The Walking Dead’. Unexpected deaths and shock value hit you straight away (that poor horse). The show is already establishing that things are dark, things are depressing, and that there is the need for a hero.

If I had to find some faults for this episode I would probably say it was the opening theme song. It just didn’t have that same iconic feel as oppose to the previous season but it does seem like a theme that people will grow to love as the series goes on.

It is definitely a show I can see myself watching week after week, leaving me desperately wanting more. I am so glad that we have this show back in our lives and that we have this unique story being unfolded through this medium. It had the right amount of comedy to balance out the seriousness of the story.

For a first impression I give this show a 4/5

Welcome back Attack on Titan, we have missed you.

Attack On Titan PS4 Footage

Just came across this awesome footage from the newly released in Japan title, Attack On Titan. It’s great to see some of the in game action which look fantastic, I’m a fan of the series and I really can’t for a Western release. Here’s the footage which goes for over 2 minutes and also features Titan Eren kicking some massive Titan ass!

Is anyone else waiting for this title?

Attack On Titan Live Action Trailer

Shingeki no Kyojin, or as it’s known in the West, Attack on Titan, is a hugely popular dramatic series which started life as a manga before evolving into a superior anime series. The series has so far spawned one season however a second season will be released as well. But before that, there’s a live action movie being released in two parts. The first part will be hitting Japanese theatres on August 1st while the second one releases on September 19th.

Here’s your first look trailer at the live action movie which is looking pretty great with some scary CGI titans. No action scenes of Mikasa, Levi, Eren or anyone else but this is only a teaser 30 second trailer. Fingers crossed the next trailer has more footage.

Attack On Titan Water Coolers

You know when you’re at work and you’re thirsty so you head to the water cooler? Imagine how much more interesting it would be and how different the conversation would be if the water coolers looked like this.

Aqua Clara is a Japanese based water cooler manufacturer who have a range of coolers called “Dress-Up Server” cooler models. These models have interchangeable front panels and replace them with ones featuring Levi, the Colossal Titan or Eren. The coolers go live on February 26th which is the day the official site will have updated information on the campaign.

Running the 6th of March through to the 20th of March, you’ll be able to stroll into a Lotteria store and pick up one of the 5, 7 or 10 “meter class” stacks of delicious cheeseburgers. They’ll also have a massive serving of fries called the Potato Girl Sasha. But it wouldn’t be Japan unless there were some great freebies thrown in. You can also get  3D maneuver gear keychain and hamburger or blade (Eren) or a (Mikasa) shrimp burger voucher when you purchase a burger. If you opt for the fries instead, you can pick up a burger (Levi) shrimp burger voucher (Annie) or instead, fries with an emblem badge.

Attack on Titan stockings

One thing you will see a lot of in Japan are females wearing stockings with printed designs on them The stockings come in all cute and amazing designs with some looking like authentic tattoos. Attack on Titan is still hugely popular in Japan so it made sense to a stocking manufacturer to cross the two and make some stockings with Attack on Titan designs on them.

The stockings, which you can see below, come with designs of Eren, Levi and the titular Titan on the stockings. They’re releasing in November and will sell for ¥1,500.
