That time of the week is upon us again…Japanese Weekly Sales Charts. I’m not even going to waffle on about what came in first for hardware, it’s been the same thing for over a year now. But there was a massive surprise with the PS Vita outselling the Wii U for the first time in Japan.
Should Nintendo be worried though? Probably not, not when you see the sales of the 3DS and the 3DS LL (XL) combined which accounted for in excess of 74 thousand units shifted. The only hardware that was even close to that was the PS3 with 18,529 units sold. Sales of the PS Vita can’t be attributed to a game release as there’s nothing in the top 10 for the Vita so it is curious to see. We’ll see how it pans out next week for the Wii U.

An amazing fact has just emerged from Japan regarding sales of Nintendo’s handheld, the 3DS, compared to Sony’s home console, the PS3.
Even though the PS3 was launched back on November 11th, 2006 and the 3DS was released on February 26th, 2011, sales of the 3DS have already exceeded the PS3.
Currently the PS3 is sitting at 8,593,899 units sold while the 3DS has raced past it at 8,728,515 units in gamers’ hands. And with still some amazing AAA quality software to be released for the 3DS, it still has ways to go with sales.
Will anything topple the hold that Nintendo have on the handheld market in Japan?
It’s that time of the week when the Media Create Sales figures come in and damn if the the 3DS isn’t sitting pretty in Japan. In the hardware stakes, the 3DS is easily besting its nearest rival, the PS3, by well in excess of 50K+ units. Wow. Meanwhile the direct competitor to the 3DS, Sony’s PS Vita, managed to get over the line with a figure barely over 15K units.
This continues the trend set by the PSP when it was released in Japan where it sold by the bucketload upon launch but week after week continued to dip in sales against the juggernaut that is the original Nintendo DS.
And the trend continues one the software charts were from the top 20, 13 of the games are on Nintendo hardware. Once again, wow.
Anyways, the charts are below for your perusal, have a look and then tell me who’d you rather throw your support behind. I know where I stand.
