Today we went to Tokyo Skytree to check out the amazing stores there…but really to try and find a Mimikyu plushie at the Pokemon Centre. (SPOILER: They were all sold out). We found an amazing Studio Ghibli store, had some lunch and heaps of other cool stuff. Oh, and towards the end, our camera broke 🙁 So that night we had to rush to Akihabara to buy a new one!
Welcome to the first J-Vlog update in this Japan trip for 2016! In this first update, it kicks off with us waiting for our flight to Japan at Melbourne Airport, some in-flight footage, landing at Narita and then some walking around our neighbourhood of Asakusa in search of some food and sweets! This one was a rush job as we’re completely tired from the flight but we hope you enjoy. And if you like what you see, please subscribe to the Japandaman YouTube channel to stay up to date.
And this just in…myself and my waifu are headed to Japan for a long overdue holiday and to tick some things off our bucketlist, namely spending Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Tokyo.
We don’t really have an agenda as such for this trip, it’ll be more of a “what are we doing today?” kind of scenario which is something we’re both very cool with. The only things we have on the To Do list so far is ice skating at the Tokyo Skytree and living out our Yuri On Ice moments, buying a Mimikyu plushie, going to Winter Comiket and spending Xmas Day at Tokyo Disneyland which we’re really excited about!
Something new that I’ll be doing which I’ve never done before is a daily vlog which will be uploaded at the end of each day or at some point in the evening. I’ll be posting my usual pictures and what not to social media but the vlogging is still very new to me and Japan seems like an ideal place to record some memories from each day that I hope you’ll enjoy watching. The vlogs will be posted to my Youtube channel:
I’d love to see that number of 223 subscribers increase while we’re over there so I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed! I’ll post links to all my social media channels below so if you’re not following me yet, you have no excuse now 🙂
NOW LET THE COUNTDOWN BEGIN!
Let’s kick things off for this new Gamer Girl segment with someone I’ve been following for a few years now on Instagram. Jazz Milczenie Baranow is a 27 year old Polish girl living in Germany. She loves gaming (duh), tattoos, Japan, art, Star Wars, music and horror movies. So many boxes ticked right there!
Her posts are witty, funny, amusing and always very cool! I’ve included a few pics below and a link to her IG page which you should check out and follow!

Time to choose the Japandaman Cosplayer of the Month! And this time around it’s none other than REIKA! Reika is regarded as one of the most highly technical cosplayers around. Her cosplays are extremely intricate which she puts together all herself, her wigs are nothing short of astounding and her make up skills are unparalleled. One aspect of her cosplays that she is well known for is primarily cosplaying as male characters, or what’s commonly called, crossplay. No matter what she does, you just know that it’s going to be nothing short of amazing, impressive and something you won’t forget.
We were lucky enough to interview Reika at SMASH! 2014 for It’s Japan, Man. Here’s myself and Neko with the interview.
And the special guests keep rolling out for SMASH! 2016. This time it’s mecha cosplayer,TAKAHIRO (GOLDY) SAKAI! It’s shaping up to be an amazing looking convention for it’s 10th anniversary. Here’s the press release with all the info below.
SMASH! 2016 GUEST PROFILE:
COSPLAYER TAKAHIRO (GOLDY) SAKAI
Official Website: http://gadgettool.web.fc2.com/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/Goldy-1549129935365479/
Meet TAKAHIRO (GOLDY) SAKAI also known as ‘The Gundam G u y ’.
With over ten years experience in constructing mecha costumes and armour accessories, Goldy has become one of the world’s greatest craftsmen.
Inspired by mecha characters from Japanese pop-culture such as Gundam and Evangelion, the mecha enthusiast has transformed this passion into something more complex and fulfilling.
In 2006, Goldy was one of Japan’s representatives for the World Cosplay Summit Championship, and was also the recipient of Brother Industries’‘Special Award’.
Sharing his knowledge with like-minded peers, Goldy regularly conducts cosplay workshops in Akihabara, Tokyo. During these workshops, cosplayers get the opportunity to spend a few hours with Goldy to learn the basics of armour crafting.
Despite so little is known about him, there is significant respect for Goldy beyond Japan. Not only has Goldy been invited as a special guest, but he has also been a judge and speaker at various conventions such as Anime Expo, London’s MCM Comic Con, Philippines’ Cosplay Mania, and North Carolina’s Cosplay America.
This will be Goldy’s first Australian appearance at SMASH! Sydney Manga and Anime Show 2016.
I’m very late on this one but I thought it was still worth writing about because it’s so damn cute! Here’s an awesome new collaboration between Nintendo and makers of Hello Kitty, Sanrio. This stunningly cute 3DS looks set to release in Japan (of course) on November 28, 2015.
The amazing piece of hardware will set you back ¥17,000, that nabs you the Hello Kitty 3DS model, cover faceplates with custom art, charger, 4GB memory card and Hello Kitty software pre-installed. If you already have a new 3DS, you can pick up the Hello Kitty faceplates for ¥2,000.
Sony will be holding a “Hatsune Miku ‘Magical Mirai 2015” event in Japan from September 4 through to 6 and one of the items to be displayed is the Project Morpheus reality headset. Even better though is that Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia have revealed that they’ll be running the Sega feat. Hatsune Miku Project: VR Tech Demo for the headset.
The demo itself will consist of Hatsune Miku performing a virtual reality concert. Sony have previously shown off this tech along with the demo at last year’s E3 show in June. The demo will only be shown at certain times during the event, commencing at 1PM on September 4th, again at 4PM September 5th and then repeating at 9AM on September 6th.
If you’re in the area and want to go and check it out, keep in mind like a lot of things in Japan, it’s extremely popular. They’ll hand you a ticket but if too many people show up, it’ll be via a lottery system on the day.
