Here’s a very, very quick first look at Scarlett Johansson as Major Kusanagi in the live action film version of Ghost In The Shell. It’s only a 13 second clip but it shows the Major as being invisible before totally uppercutting some bad guy. Looks amazingly badass!
Here’s the first handful of mini trailers to be released for the upcoming live action adaptation of Ghost In The Shell starring Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbaek, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche and Michael Pitt.
When I say mini trailers, they’re literally mini. There are five trailers with each one running for around ten seconds. It gives you your first look at Scarlett as Motoko Kusanagi as well as a peek into the aesthetic of the film. Instead of posting each trailer separately, here’s a playlist with each trailer.
I don’t normally get too political on Japandaman.com but something has flared up recently that I need to have my two cents. The issue I’m referring to is it seems a lot of people aren’t happy with the casting of Scarlett Johansson in the lead role of Motoko Kusanagi for the Hollywood live action adaptation of Ghost In The Shell. Now granted that this series is an absolute cult phenomenon and even before the 2 season series and the recent new releases, the manga and the original movie are regarded as being absolute classics.
I for one am of the firm belief that even if the casting had gone with an Asian actress, people would still have their arms up in the air with the choice of actress, in that it wasn’t the actress they wanted. This goes beyond the whitewashing and into feverish fandom that often plagues these productions and classic fan favourites. Not taking anything away from whitewashing which is a real issue. So it’s with this mind that I found the following video from YouTuber, That Japanese Man Yuta, particularly interesting to see what the Japanese public thought of the casting decision.
Interesting and varied reactions, right? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the casting, the video or both.
During Bandai Visual’s recent event in Japan, news were revealed regarding the upcoming anime series, Ghost in the Shell: Arise. The series will serve as a prequel to the Ghost in the Shell universe we all know and will be divided into four 50 minute animated movies.
The focus will be on the younger days of Motoko Kusanagi and the first movie, titled Ghost Pain, will hit Japanese cinemas on June 22nd while the Blu Ray and DVD versions releasing on July 26th. During the movie, the Public 9 section members will be introduced, focusing on the younger Motoko while also bringing in Batou, Togusa, Saito, Pazu, Ishikawa, Borma and Aramaki.
So it’s still a few months off but until then, you can enjoy the trailer for Ghost Pain.
