Superbowl Ad For Ghost In The Shell

Here’s a new trailer for the live action adaptation of Ghost In The Shell. The trailer is from Superbowl LI and shows some new footage at the start before showing another trailer with footage already seen but, you know, it still looks good. I know this movie has quite a few haters and doubters and for good reason but I’ll hold judgement and won’t read any reviews until I see it myself.

Ghost In The Shell First Official Trailer

We’ve seen teasers in the past and a recent blink and you’ll miss trailer giving us our first look at Scarlett Johansson as The Major in the upcoming live adaptation of cult classic series, Ghost In The Shell. But here’s the first full length official trailer giving us more than a glimpse and showing us a lot more. Anyone familar with the series, Stand Alone Complex, will recognise the scenes from the trailer and I have to say…it looks pretty good so far.

First Look At Ghost In The Shell Live Action Film

Here’s the first handful of mini trailers to be released for the upcoming live action adaptation of Ghost In The Shell starring Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbaek, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche and Michael Pitt.

When I say mini trailers, they’re literally mini. There are five trailers with each one running for around ten seconds. It gives you your first look at Scarlett as Motoko Kusanagi as well as a peek into the aesthetic of the film. Instead of posting each trailer separately, here’s a playlist with each trailer.

Japanese Opinions On Hollywood Whitewashing

I don’t normally get too political on Japandaman.com but something has flared up recently that I need to have my two cents. The issue I’m referring to is it seems a lot of people aren’t happy with the casting of Scarlett Johansson in the lead role of Motoko Kusanagi for the Hollywood live action adaptation of Ghost In The Shell. Now granted that this series is an absolute cult phenomenon and even before the 2 season series and the recent new releases, the manga and the original movie are regarded as being absolute classics.

I for one am of the firm belief that even if the casting had gone with an Asian actress, people would still have their arms up in the air with the choice of actress, in that it wasn’t the actress they wanted. This goes beyond the whitewashing and into feverish fandom that often plagues these productions and classic fan favourites. Not taking anything away from whitewashing which is a real issue. So it’s with this mind that I found the following video from YouTuber, That Japanese Man Yuta, particularly interesting to see what the Japanese public thought of the casting decision.

Interesting and varied reactions, right? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the casting, the video or both.
